RYA Theory Courses in London

Dates and Prices

RYA Classroom courses are a vital complement to the practical courses and we pay the same careful attention to this as to our instruction at sea. Our shore based course instructors are current RYA practical sailing instructors. We make subjects relevant, interesting and fun to study.

RYA theory courses in London are held in central locations with good public transport links. These include the London Chamber of Commerce at 33 Queen Street EC4 which is in the heart of the City, close to Bank and Mansion House stations and a short walk from London Bridge station. Modern and comfortable meeting rooms with reception facilities make this a convenient and stylish venue for our RYA courses in London.

We offer RYA Day Skipper Theory and RYA Yachtmaster Theory courses in London over 5 evenings plus home study. This format has proved to be efficient and successful. Evening classes are convenient and fun as you meet and study with like-minded people and can share ideas and experience. At the same time comprehensive materials for private study mean that students can consolodate their work at home (or even complete all of the course at home if necessary)

Course Structure. The 5 evenings are usually on the same evening each week and are spread out over an elapsed time of 7 weeks. There is a gap of 2 weeks between evenings 1 and 2 and between 2 and 3. Each session runs from 1830 to 2130. On the first evening students are given all of their course materials - including a CD with Elite Sailing's complete course presentation in audio visual format and a detailed study guide. We have adopted a modular structure so that students know exactly what should be covered each week and these modules are exactly reflected on the disk. In each evening session the instructor will introduce the topics for the subsequent week and deal with any problems and questions arising from the preceding week. The evening sessions help students to maintain focus and deal with aspects that are best taught by an instructor face to face. Subjects that can only be learnt by individual study or practice are scheduled for work at home - using the Elite CD and RYA materials. This eliminates unnecessary classroom time so the course can be comfortably completed in 5 evenings sessions plus about 40 hours of home study. (Most other schools run courses over 7 evening sessions plus a whole weekend).

What if I have to miss one or more evenings? Because the course is modular you will know exactly what is covered each evening so you can easily work through the material at home prior to the next evening. Your instructor will also help you work around any absences.

Test Papers.

On the last evening the instructor will distribute the test papers (2 papers - each 1.5 hours). Studnets have up to 3 months to complete these and send them in to Elite sailing for marking. This means that there is no artificial time pressure and, if you are having difficulty with any aspects, you can put more work in to ensure a good result at the test.
