Small Craft First Aid

One Day Course
(0900 - 1600)

Previous knowledge or experience: Nil.

Illness or injury at sea presents special problems because professional medical assistance is often not immediately available. An injured person's life may depend on the ability of fellow crew to give first aid. Ideally, all sailors should have some first aid knowledge.

This classroom course with a qualified medical first aid instructor covers the normal range of medical emergency first aid procedures with special emphasis on the marine small craft environment. You will learn how to assess a casualty's condition and how to safely administer first aid to assist recovery. In particular you will have the opportunity to practise resuscitation techniques including casualty assessment, recovery position, rescue breathing and chest compression.

The course also covers control of bleeding and initial treatment of shock, burns, hypothermia and various injuries, along with a basic understanding of conditions such as asthma, epilepsy and diabetes.

Achievement: You will be able to carry out basic medical first aid procedures with particular emphasis on resuscitation.
