Cruising Instructor Course (Sail)

Cruising Instructor (CI) is the essential entry level teaching qualification in the RYA Cruising Training Scheme.  After qualifying as a CI its expected that you will build experience teaching practical sailing courses for Start Yachting, Competent Crew and Day Skipper and then go on to attend a further course with the RYA to become a Yachtmaster Instructor (YMI). This 5 day CI course is organised and run to standards approved by the RYA. The CI Trainer, Dave Allan (also previous principal of Elite Sailing), is among a number of YMIs selected and appointed by the RYA to deliver the course. To take the course you must already have the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore (Sail) with a valid commercial endorsement. The course will cover training standards, instructional techniques, course planning and management, and instructional practice using role-play methods where you may act as the instructor or as the student. During the course your instructional skills and your own sailing and skippering skills will be assessed. The course will be moderated by a second CI Trainer who will attend on the last day. At the end of the course your trainer will give you a detailed debrief and the course result - which is sent to the RYA and can be either:
Pass - and a recommendation for award of the CI endorsement.
Or:
Fail - and an 'Action Plan' advising you what you need to do to improve your performance to reach the 'Pass' standard.

This is an intensive course that will extend your sailing skills and teaching ability. We will assist you in preparation for the course and, during the training, provide comprehensive advice in running RYA cruising courses so that, when you pass, you will be a confident, effective, professional instructor.
